Our school pays for us to take the PSATs sophomore and junior year. It's quite nice, having extra practice for free. ;D The English parts were sooooooo easy (except for a few vocab words) but I definitely need to brush up on my math. We had to pay $20 to take the PSATs. Sophomores and juniors take the PSATs, freshmen and juniors take the PSSAs, all grades take the IOWAs (which go on your transcript as well), and juniors and seniors can take the SATs. I also struggled with the math as well! Then again, English is my strong subject, but that math really sucked. Like clarinetgirl103 said, go to collegeboard.com. I checked it out on my own time, even though we will have to research a college for English later this year, and it was really helpful. I thought IOWAs were only for private schools! or maybe that's why nobody knows what they are... but gosh, I sure don't miss them. I was SO happy to be free of them when I came to Airport...

Shoot, I just realized that IOWAs are not Pennsylvania only tests, you're right, they can be nationwide. (I go to a public school.) I've still never heard of the ACTs though.

Clarinet players, every music teacher I've ever asked about it is strongly AGAINST auditioning with the Mozart Concerto. If your prospective college doesn't ask for it, don't do it. The clarinet faculty knows it better than they know their hometown, and the last thing they want to hear is you playing it on a Bb clarinet when it should be on an A even though it wasn't composed for either of them. If they do ask for it, it's really just setting the bar for all the prospective students, since no one's going to ace that piece. Funny you should say that. My clarinet instructor was against it because I don't have an A clarinet.

For anyone confused over what the difference is between the ACT and SAT, the ACT has a science component while the SAT does not, and it also has an optional writing part, while the SAT writing cannot be avoided. Both have English and Math. Both are typically accepted by colleges (though some may have a preference). There are also scoring differences and total point value differences, but I'm not about to delve into that...

We are required to take PSATs 9-11th grade... 10ths get it free, 9ths and 11ths have to pay 15 to get it scored, if you don't u hvae to take it anyways. yeah. I thought it was rather easy... granted, I love math and have a good vocabulary :-P

We take the PSAT for practice as 10th graders and for real as 11th graders (when you qualify for the National Merit whatever it is exactly, if you score well enough). In 10th grade we take the GQE (graduation qualifying exam), otherwise known as the ISTEP+ any other year, in which you must pass if you want to graduate high school.

Wow you must be smart to think the SAT is easy as an 8th grader...but yeah, the PSAT is easy...we're required to take it from 9-10th grades, advanced 8th graders are required to take it, and you have to pay for it in 11th. I haven't taken the SAT yet, but I would like to hurry up and get it over with. I was going to take it last year, but my guidance counselor told me not to.

Um, a word of advice.
Those HUGE SAT/ACT books REALLY help!
Oh, and don't think that you are going to get a wonderful score on either the SAT or ACT if you don't understand how it's set up or what they are going to ask. (I made that mistake with the SATs when I was a Junior... I ended up taking 2 more times.... =\ )
Getting started on college essays early is always a good thing.
And sometimes online applications can save you the application fee! (It did for me at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA!!!)

My school alone is over 1/4 Asian. And not to sound stereotypical, but a lot of them are pushed soooooooo hard. Over half of my friends took SATs as 8th graders.
