Hehe-we did a "Music till Midnight" fundraiser and our director teaches 5 ensambles so he enlisted the help of the midd school band director to conduct our band.We had a greate time with the midd school band and him.Because it was april fools day he made us play a lot of those evil songs

*Sawmill creek-the song you had to play to get into middle school advanced band *the Tempest-also loathed by flutes I remember those. *shudder* Not necessarily one I've played, but the idea of using the title as a swear is praised by some who are in Wind Ensemble. The song? "Music for Prague 1968". It's a haunting piece with tons of layers and it's really very lovely, but the length! The LENGTH!! 20 minutes of high woodwind fluff and brass chords!! *implodes*

Pomp and Circumstance, mostly disliked by seniors and those also in orchestra but their hatred passes on to underclassmen. Anything by Sousa, it's an Etown tradition to hate all his works. We play a march by him almost every year and we still hate his works.

......... A Sussex Mummer's Christmas Carol - Percy Grainger... ACCCCCCK. ............ UHHHHHG. We played that this year, and our bd was OBSESSED with it. It was his fav piece, and EVERYONE else hated it w/a bloody passion. Pretty sounding, yes, but BORING. As for my evil band music: Block M -- Jerry H. Bilik YUCK. BARF. Again, another one that was the bd's obsessive fav but EVERYBODY else hated. On the concert, he told the audience that it was the band's fav piece, and we all groaned and the first clari made throat-slitting motions at the audience. It was quite funny. Citadel -- Frank Erickson EWWWY. We never played it cuz it was soooo ugly!!! This was m.s., and we had a really good band actually, and even playing it right, it sounded nasty!!! Know what bd did though? He gave it to the, um, "struggling?" 7th grade band....to put it nicely, it didn't end well.... Hallelujah Chorus -- Handel. Every year on the holiday concert symphonic band w/the choir. It was only my first year, and I'm already annoyed with it. Yay, only 3 more years to go.... Even our bd was thrilled when we finally performed for the last time. He made up a little song about how happy he was, lol. We only play the holiday concert, uhm, 3 TIMES every year in the span of 2 weeks.....!! Ack!

Oh my God, 1frodos1, you took me back in time! I remember Sawmill Creek being the TOUGHEST SONG EVER on sax. The Tempest was great, too. If you want a flashback, look for a piece called "Onward" by Gary P. Gilroy. It sounds almost identical, yet we used it as a warm-up piece for adjudication this year. Stand music sucks. Period. So do these pieces: Be Thou My Vision - John Gillingham? Nothing like resting for 80-some measures. *yawn*A Sussex Mummer's Christmas Carol - Percy Grainger... ACCCCCCK. On Wings of Magic - Nayoa Wada. That was ABHORRENT last year. I'm beginning to dislike James Swearingen, too. All his pieces sound the same, and I've played so many (Novena, Invicta, Dawn of a New Day, Covington Square, Make a Joyful Noise, Aventura - all of those in 4 years). It only gets worse when he rearranges Karl King marches - they're tremendously repetitive (Peace Jubilee, Gallant Marines, Emblem of Unity, Free World March, etc.). Indeed, that is quite the evil song (on woodwind parts, that is). Has anyone here heard or seen the music by Gillingham known as "With Heart and Voice"? One of the top ten most evil pieces, and I haven't actually played it. Most of the song is 16th (plus) notes for the woodwinds. One of the F Horn players showed me his music, and he had 32nd notes. And it's not a slow song. Anyways, evil songs... Most middle school songs. I have bad memories of middle school band (bored out of my mind to the point I wanted to ditch.) Most Sousa marches. Though my dad doesn't understand why.

Little Fuge by Bach. The flute part is just, horrible. More black then there is white. xP
And Jonny B. Good the flutes parts are so boring. d: We rest for 12 measures and have only quarters notes, which only last for about 5 measures. And they edited it. We only play like the first 4 lines.

Sawmill creek= awful Bruce pearson should be punished severely for writing that. Be Thou My vision isn't nice to the woodwinds. The 3rd clari part seriously goes like this: Rest for 3/4 of the song, and when you finally come in, it's in the key of B, and 32nd runs. *dies* I was a freshman, for pete's sake... WHY?? But I still love the piece. I'll just have you play it for me instead of me playing it. THE 4TH MVT OF 4 SCOTTISH DANCES. Nothing like writing a piece that can't be performed without a left side Eb! Thanks a lot Mr Arnold!!! Really appreciate the gesture there... And kill John Paynter too, for allowing it to stay around in the band arraignment... (Yay for subtle humor)
