Jeepers! I wonder how much Maryland is paying JMU to open against them. ><
I survived my second day of classes. I'm a crazy person, and I enrolled in 7 classes this semester. (that's 19 credit hours, same as I too fall of my freshman year) I've officially been to all my classes now, and I'm so excited. I doubt I'll be able to keep up with riding my bike to classes all day though.

Yeah, this is the same sort of reason we opened against USC last year (and proceeded to get utterly creamed). There's a lot of money in it, and that's not even factoring in increased media coverage.
It's also the reason that William and Mary is opening against us this year.

Yep, TTU is our homecoming game this year, so I'll be playing in the alumni band for that game! ;D TTU will probably get about $300 to $400K for the game. And we will be creamed at the game most likely. I asked a guy in band today if the football team was any good. He laughed and said that they only won one game last year... In other news, I moved into my dorm last night! Facing the front door: My bed: Our OWN bathroom! My desk (which I am sitting at right now) Facing the back of the room: Sink/Vanity:

So I went to bed at midnight last night and fell asleep right away, and slept really well. Next thing I know, I'm being woken up by the loudest screeching noise I've ever heard. They decided that we needed a fire drill at 2:45 in the morning. Not fun.

Our marching band show is Shostakovich. Yeah. We played the first movement a few times today (Festive Overture) and I have no clue how I'm going to be able to memorize it.

So, I dunno, this probably isn't an issue for most of you all...but, recently, I feel like I've been losing the ability to relate to others in my peer group in college. Perhaps it's just a result of me getting older (I am steadily advancing into 20-something territory, after all). Or perhaps it's a result of the work I've done (when you spend a summer studying the atmosphere of another world, it does do weird things to your sense of perspective). But, regardless, the result is I'm having difficulty understanding why my friends consider various things (beer pong, going out, various pop culture phenomenon) important, because it no longer really means anything to me (well, beer pong never really meant anything to me, but that's beside the point).
Although, for what it's worth, I've mentioned this to my sister (who's half way finished with her PhD), and according to her, I'll probably be a lot happier once I hit grad school, since the people there will be more on my level in terms of seriousness and drive.

spacermase... you just go to the wrong college. Clearly. or it could be that with your very awesome, very professional internshipthingie this summer, you entered into the "adult realworld state of mind"?
Honestly though, I think it's great that you're maturing past the idiocracy of your peers. I don't understand the "college life" either, even though I'm 19. Though I'm not going to lie, I enjoy the social aspect of the weekend parties. I'm torn between it's "wrongness" and the enjoyment of hanging out with my friends, who do partake in... activities.

Actually, now that I think about it, that's almost certainly it. This summer, I essentially got thrown head first into the Real World, and you pretty much have to mature in those situations in order to survive. Otherwise you end up like one of the kids in my internship group, who drank a can of Coors Light as part of his graduation speech. At 11:30 AM. In front of the head of the program and several other NASA bigwigs (it apparently never dawned on him that that might possibly hurt his career options). On a lighter note, having just got back from swing dance club (which had a record turn-out for our first lesson), I'm feeling a lot more connected, so that's good. Behold the power of music and dance!

I've never been interested in drinking and I've always been rather career focused so being stuck in the several hour long uniform check-out line next to the two juniors who talked about the best types of alcohol to get wasted on was pure torture to me. I don't get that mindset. It caused some serious issues with the guy and I this past spring- he has always been of that previous mindset... I find I have more issues when I'm at work, almost all my staff (technically I'm boss lady) around my age seem to have a two track mind, alcohol and the opposite sex. I can't relate to any of them and their lackadaisical attitude towards their job. Yeah, it sucks but deal with it, it's better than working at the park.

feel free to judge as you want, but I have found that a little light drinking helps manage my stress. I may be a crotchety 55-year old man in every other aspect, but I fit the college drinking stereotype reasonably well. However, I will direct angry glares at the girls on my campus who get completely blasted every weekend, solely for the purpose of being drunk, having sex or whatever their reason is. and I certainly direct glares at the drug-users on campus. and... i never ever every ever let stress-relief get in the way of finishing homework/taking care of myself and the important things in life. *sigh*
Organic chemistry = college course straight from hell.

I was in love with organic in HS. That was really the only science I understood out of the 4 I took. I imagine the college level is more intense.
I have no complaints. I go to community. My only complaint is having an 8 am BASIC theory course with an hour drive. Meaning I have to be awake in 6 hours. That, and the $30 a week it will cost me in gas...

So, I might not do marching band next year. I've been thinking about it for a while. College band is fun and all, I'm just not as into it as I was in high school, probably because I hardly know anybody. And it doesn't help that at the end of last year's season I was ready to be done for good. I just told myself I'd do it one year in college, just to see. It's a lot of work (though WAY less than high school), and soon all my college classes will start getting harder and more demanding. It'll be weird to not be in marching band though. It has consumed the past five years of my life. But I think it's time (after this season ends, of course).

The problem my boyfriend and I had (other than he chose the wrong time of the month to royally screw up) was that he would say he was smart about drinking and then when he came back from his cruise everyone on it (it was a community kind of deal) said how much fun they had getting him drunk every night and they would tell stories he wouldn't remember. Not what I would describe as "smart."

yeah, speaking of all these out of conference football pairings, apparently fox news wants to broadcast the KU vs. Southern Miss game and has decided on an 11:00am start. I normally wouldn't gripe, but this is the day that KU Band Day was scheduled for which includes a parade before the game as well as the high school bands performing halftime. unfortunately, with an 11:00am start, that makes the parade too early in the day, so they decided to cancel it for this year!! anybody else's schools have to make sacrifices for the networks?
