Just a quick note, please try to keep conversation down in threads. PM if you want to chat Anyways, to be drum major you need to ACT the part. The drum majors at IUP said it best; "You have to be ON while you are on the field, but you also can't let that go when you are off." In other words, step up your game on the podium. Set the example. While you are off the field, do this as well, but don't shut out everyone. You need to be a leader, a friend, and a confidant to members of the band.

On the field or off, in the concert hall or the rehearsal room, Leadership is the duty to one's self, their section, their band." - me being a little too cheesy during 6am leadership seminars... And one more thing, when you're DM, don't forget that you're still a part of the band, and not a BD. You maintain no right to talk back or disrespect, or have exceptional special "privileges." This was a big issue at my school this year.

Whoever said that it's we when you don't do well, and they when you do, was correct.

You can't let yourself become embarrassed by anything. You'll be in front of the band and, inevitably, you'll either have to feel stupid doing something or you'll do something that will make you feel stupid. Laugh it off, move on, and have fun. As a DM, you have to be a performer, and with that you can't let yourself feel stupid. There was a phrase I learned while at Drum Major Academy four years ago..."Embrace the stupidity."

Just be you. Be fun and outgoing. Im always dancing around and people seem to be drawn to that. it somehow lightens up the mood. just try to make everyone feel like they are important. and when someone does something for u let them now u really appreciate it. itll def earn you some brownie points

One thing you need to make sure you do (and I don't know if others have already said this) is to utilize what other resources you have. Mainly, your section leaders, captains, lieutenants, what ever you call them. Use your fellow student leaders. I have off days, everyone has off days. The best thing in the world is knowing that you could be missing our out cold and have complete trust that your other leaders can run the rehearsal should some freak accident occur and you and your BD are unable to be there.
......That was a very convoluted and confusing way to put it.
Ok. Use your people. They like it, you like it, and everything works better when everyone is in the loop.
hehehe.
