It was a very long process, we wanted to do it for our 2008 season (out team's 2007 motto was "Believe", so we were going to be all corny and play "Don't stop believing"), but working out the rights and dealing with our arranger was an absolute mess. But according to my director, we have the arrangement and as of right now we'll be performing it at the Mizzou game.

well, our show theme has changed. it is now somewhere along the lines of "pathos" but it will probably change again. i don't remeber what the music is...but parts of it are in the Phantom Regiments 1996 and 2003 shows. it's awesome.

;D Our BD finally told us what our show is (after months of pestering on the band's part)! We are doing a NY subway theme:
We are starting in Carnegie Hall and intro with Beethoven's 5th ( ;D) Then we are going on the subway (percussion feature - we have too many percussionists) to Yankee Stadium, where we will play take me out to the ball game and other songs "indicative to yankee stadium" (so says my BD). Then back to the subway and to Central Park, which will have lots of visuals (apparently something about a picnic blanket and basket?) and we will here play a mixture of Clair de Lune and West Side Story. Then back to the subway and to Times Square, where we will to the countdown to new year's and play a big mix of all sorts of stuff.
I am so excited! It actually has a theme! Last year we did transformers and it had all sorts of weird symbolism no one understood. (Our drum major did this weird dance thing in the third movement and today, months after the season ended, he asks, "Why was I dancing?")

Our theme is generic, but I like it: Space. Intro with Also Sprach Zarathustra, moving into, of course, Mars and then Jupiter. Closer would be 'Reflections of Earth' from the Disney firework's show, with a Jupiter reprise. I'm excited.

Sounds like a lot of fun, enjoy!

I like Alto's show... I wish my Bd's were that creative!! Thanks! Yeah, I love it. And it is good for our band, too. I already had two people tell me they are joining next year just cause our show sounds cool. And one is a clarinet!!! That means less of a chance of the other two clarinets turned sax that are running against me for section leader being allowed to play clari this year. Let's see, 8 last year, 1 senior leaving, 1 joining guard or sax, approx. 2-3 freshmen coming up, the newbie, that makes ... 9-10! bigger than last year! (or even more depending on freshmen, our class had 5 freshman! I doubt the upcoming ones are as much...)

Yeah.. same here, only bigger band- we are finally rebuilding our section, we will have 10 freshmen and finally have enough players for all 4 bands to have real sections, with a full complement of 9 in the top band and some 32 total... yesss...

Wow 32 for mb? or for concert? or is mb mandatory at your school for concert? It used to be like that at our school but changed this year. We had a total section of 8 and 5 freshmen in mb; and a total of about 17 and 9ish were freshman in both bands combined. There were only 3 upperclassmen in symphonic band and one freshman in wind ensemble. But we had an interesting class as far as numbers go. But so were the seniors. We are loosing some of our most important lows as seniors (*cough* bass clarinet). But we are getting off-topic now.

Marching band, and yes, it's mandatory. We have 4 concert ensembles, so it'll be like 9- 9- 7- 7 or something to that extent. Which is way better than the current 7-7-6-2. But what we really need are bass clarinets. IDK how many fish we have, we'll only have 1 uc bass next year and he'll be a senior. oi... But this is off- topic.

Our show is called "East Meets West". It's the music of Aaron Copeland. It sounds cool, from what i've heard of it. But it seems like its going to be hard to have great percussion parts. But we're supposed to have some DCI guy writing our percussion music, so it should be pretty sweet anyway.

We just had our first Section Leader meeting, so I can now present to you the Official Unofficial Tentative Show List for the University of Illinois Marching Illini! As of right now, our 2009 shows will consist of selections from: JOURNEY BEN FOLDS EARTH WIND AND FIRE in addition to a Jazz show featuring CHANNEL ONE SUITE YOU, ME, AND A BOTTLE MAKES THREE (TONIGHT, BABY) ZOOT SUIT RIOT some kind of boy band show, and a Halloween show featuring NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN THE THEME FROM ALFRED HITCHCOCK THRILLER TOCCATA AND FUGUE Basically, a really wild season that sounds like a LOT of fun. Oh, and we're getting new uniforms. Huzzah! Funny story, this past year my band did a Journey show, and a kind of creepy/Halloween show that included Night on Bald Mountain, Alfred Hitchcock Theme, Thriller and Toccata and Fugue! Do you know yet if you all will be dancing during the Thriller part? ;D Closer would be 'Reflections of Earth' from the Disney firework's show, That's so cool, we did a Reflections of Earth show this past year. It was some crazy hard music and marching, but it was pretty amazing too. I hope you have fun with that! I don't really know anything about my shows for this year. We don't find out until sometime mid-summer. The only one that I'm pretty for sure about is a Classic Rock/Guitar Hero show that we were supposed to do this year (but decided to postpone when Thriller was such a big hit ). But we're also getting new director next year (sad), so he/she could have some really different ideas about our shows. So we'll just have to wait and see.

Well, we'll be playing Thriller, and it will be on Halloween, so I think we're gonna have to do the dance, it's kind of a big deal, and the student section will love it. Unless they're too busy with their "card tricks"...

I wish I could figure out what this year's show is-we never find out until after Memorial Day, which is when we start getting used to the new music; and the BD refuses to reveal any hints about it, which is incredibly frustrating.
Freshie year was Earth, Wind, and Fire. Last Year was Swing, Swing. This year was Caliente...I sense no pattern whatsoever.
The percussion section, the associate director, and myself are lobbying hard for an Aerosmith or Queen halftime show-but the field coordinator wants to do Under the Sea. She usually wins these arguments, so who knows?
I have heard some rumors that the show may be Star Wars, but what would be the best show ever (and what I've been pushing for since my first band camp) would be Lord of the Rings-potentially hard to pull off, but would sound SO cool.
