I march in a forty-piece band and of those, I think five are in the pit--two bassists, a trap set and two bells. I've seen basses, guitars, bells, timbalis, concert bass drums, gongs, chimes, and all manner of things, and I was wondering what you guys put in your pits. I've also seen marching basses with wireless hookups.

Our pit last year had about 5 or 6 sets of marimbas, xylophones, and bells, a gong, timpani drums, chimes, wind chimes, a propane tank, a bass drum, and a suspended cymbal. No guitars, ever. It was an 8 or 9 person pit, I think. This year we have 7, so no timpani.

Was the propane tank specifically called for?

I don't know....the propane tank has always been fixed to the top of one of the marimbas. It got used a lot in last year's show, which was the kind of show that couldn't be done without a very strong pit section.

Was it a sort of "junk" percussion instrument? Like an American gamelan time thing (not that you have reason to know what that is)?

out of our 180 member band, we have a 20-person pit with marimbas, xylophones, possibly vibraphones, glockenspiels, timpani, concert bass drum, gong, concert snare, electric bass, and lots of toys.

My bd would NEVER allow guitars or basses in marching band, not even in pit. But electronic keyboards and bass guitars have been in indoor drumline.

the propane tank is an accent kind of instrument, almost like a brake drum.

Hmm... 2 fiberglass xylos (crappy sound, full of splinters) One marimba... kinda One electric bass Timpani Crotales Glock Vibes Chimes Bass drum Hi hat Suspended cymbal Some bands in our area have electric guitars, singers, keyboards, all sorts of crazy stuff. Ours is pretty standard. The college I wanna go to has fiddle and banjo players in their pit.

2 Vibraphone 2 Marimba 1 Bell set 1 Xylophone Gong Concert Bass Drum Timpani Cymbal kit... thingy... (I dunno what it is... it's got a bunch of cymbals on it) Wind chimes Chimes Concert Snare Drum LOTS of suspended cymbals Congas Break Drum (Or a really heavy rusted hub-cap... same thing.)
We have 7 pit members. Amazing mallet players most of them. There's a part in our show where they just rip up and down the A major scale.

Each year, my high school expanded a bit in their instrumentation; by the end of 4 seasons, we had used (as far as I can remember):
2 xylophones 2 vibraphones 3 marimbas A bunch of toms and suspended/crash cymbals Keyboards Break drum and other random junk yard metal Aluminum sheet Tambourine Gong Tympani 2 concert bass drums 4 marching bass drums Bells Crotales 2 Chimes Whipcrack Sleighbells Concert Snare Cowbells Woodblocks Claves Shakers (?) Triangles
Until we finally decided to build special rigs for the accessories, moving all of that equipment was quite the hassle.

Last year we had the following: Bells More bells Chimes 1 Vibraphone 1 Xylophone 2 Marimbas 2 Timpani 1 Concert bass drum A large amount of toms A large amount of cymbals 1 gong Various small percussion effects Brake drum most of a drumset and a keytar All the mallet instruments, the bass, and the keytar were hooked up to a very large sound system. Unfortunately, our BD blew our subwoofer, so we'll be doing the same thing this year sans the sub.
We've had as many as 10 people in our pit I think. This year we'll be smaller though.

This is the first time our marching band is really competiting, so idk what we'll have in pit. But our competitive percussion ensemble has 2 marimbas, 2 xylophones, a set of vibes, 2 sets of bells, 2 keyboards, some chimes, and a (very old and falling apart) drumset.
