The very idea of a 6A school is mind-boggling to me. The biggest school in Colorado is Cherry Creek at 3750, and all the other schools are >2500. We also have public schools of less than 50 people, that play 6 man football.

it doesent make much since to me either....for our spring concert we played Second American Folk Rhapsody and its a high school level for 1200-1500 people in it. do bigger schools really affect how good or not good a sport or music is leveled?

Yes, they do, for the simple reason that in a larger school, you have a better selection of musicians for concert band, and so you can have four or five ensembles, and then in MB, well, larger bands just sound better and are more dedicated. I don't know why--Scott or somebody might.

Well... you have people to choose from. If you have a small school with 30 in the marching band that has 2 really good trumpets, one nice and the other a slackadaisical butt, you have to keep them both since they hold the band together. If you have a marching band of 200 with 5 amazing trumpets and some 4 more that are on their way, and one is an absolute butt, you can afford to kick him out, or put him in the bottom band for a semester or two, until he learns his lesson. So you wind up with 4 great players in the top ensemble, and 1 or 2 that aren't the best but are by no means bad and are dedicated enough to give it all they've got. So you wind up with a better band than you would have if you had Wynton Marsalis Clone the Slackadaisical Butthead- and you build your band for future years by giving younger players experience.

ahhh...but i wonder why they dont have it defined by the size of the band then the entire school, for instance theres about 325? 5th graders rising to the middle school and only 70 signed up for beginner band so were going to have a small band when they get up to high school escpecially when alot of them quit
but its almost like saying that a bigger band is better then a smaller band, but sorta what alto said, its not how big a band is, its the people inside of the band that matters

Whoa! We have like 1/2 the 6th grade class sign up for band and then we eject the ones who won't be brainwashed and hang onto everyone else.

^Yeah ditto. Our sixth graders are usually anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of the class and then they lose about 20% from sixth to seventh and probably 5% from seventh to eighth, and then about a fourth sign up for high school band.

Found out today how many bandies are taking Spirit Band. Only 22 people. And only 5 freshmen. There was only 12 8th graders in the middle school band last year. It's really sad! so, new DM ratio= 2 drum majors for 22 students. For the parade anyway. And if some get schedule changes. It'll be more for games. Hopefully.

Mmm. We're auditioned. On a normal year there are 2 or 3 fish in the top band but last year the like entire clarinet section was fish because we graduated 14 senior claris in 2007. 14!!!

Sort of a late reply here, but we have 3 drum majors and about 150 marchers. Two are seniors and one is a junior.
We have four half time songs, each does one and one of the seniors has the fourth. There is no "main drum major" they are all equal. The "extra" song could have gone to any one of them. (I honestly think the two males voluntarily gave it to the female).
